2011 RAILROAD CONVENTION
HESSTON, INDIANA

F.A.Q. page

Registration Form    Vendor Registration Form   General Info Page

How long it the track?

Hesston's 7.5" ga. track is roughly a mile long figure 8 with a trestle. about 75% of the track is in the "Hesston Woods" and makes for a very enjoyable ride. The grades are long and between 2 and 3 %.

Water for steamers is from a retention pond and is rain water and very gentle on boilers.  It's available at the steaming bays and at the station.

*Bring your FRS two-way radios if you have 'em.

How many steaming bays are there?

There are 10 steaming bays with 120 volt electric, water and compressed air.  3 bays are 10' long, 3 are 12' long (and covered), one is 14', and 2 are 17' long.

What are the loading facilities like?

The transfer table for the loading bridge is about 28" above the ground. Use the little "loading bridge" to match your vehicle.  In addition to that, we have another loading track with a scissors jack adjustment for diesels and those with low loading requirements..

How many trains can fit on the main line track?

It should take about 15 min. or so to do one entire loop. There is an alternate branch to the main loop that's about the same length as the main.  We can get expect to accommodate around 15 trains on the track at one time if we space them 60 seconds apart.

The station can handle about a dozen trains with 3 trains on each of 4 station tracks. The yards can take a couple a dozen trains. We've got measurements on all the track storage.  As long as we get good estimates of train length when you register, we'll have plenty of room for all.

Tell me about the swap meet!

If you have some items to sell, bring them along. You can bring your 7.5" cars, couplers, trucks, do-dads, even full scale memorabilia.  Swap Meet will begin Saturday after lunch.  And a last chance swap meet will be held Sunday AM. Items can however, be displayed and sold at any time during the convention.  The official swap meet hours are for those who don't want to sit at a table all day and may only have a few items to sell.  Bring your own card table or blanket to display your items.

The swap meet is open to all conventioneers.

What else is there to do at Hesston?

The big advantage for Hesston over other tracks is that it's a Steam Railroad Museum with exhibits and 2 other trains (14" ga. and 2' 3' dual gauge track) that will be running during the convention. There will also be a 15" gauge loop of demonstrator track. Also, Hesston is in a major resort area with beaches, dunes, casinos, and other tourist things like mini golf and go-carts to keep the wife and the kids busy while we play with trains.

Cab Ride Raffle

While attending the convention, purchase a raffle ticket to win a Cab Ride in one of the Museum's Narrow Gauge Locomotives. You can only purchase raffle tickets at the event. Rides will be given on 2 days of the convention, Saturday and Sunday. Riders must be able to climb in and out of the cab and be wearing long pants and closed toe shoes at the time of the ride.

Side trip to the House of David Park for a tour and train ride.

The House of David (aka Eden Springs Park) was a popular amusement park and zoo that closed in the 70s after 60 plus years of operation.  A dedicated team of 1/4 scale rail fans are slowly bringing the train ride and associated buildings back to life.  They have a loop of track and a steam equipment operating now. Convention visitors are encouraged to attend a special open house at Eden Springs on Sunday the 25th. between noon and 5 PM eastern time.

Eden Springs plans to run a "Cagney" pulling 3 HOD coaches (right) and with luck the Tom Thumb will be out polishing the rail also. Visitors can view the station, engine house with HOD #7, 1906 Herschell Spillman, Sandley coaches, MTC G-16 etc. All from the convention are welcome to stop by and take a ride . As a non profit donations are nice but not required. Hopefully conventioneers have heard about HOD and have an interest to see the progress of the park and become a part of our volunteer family .

Round trip from the museum to Eden Springs is an hour.

What are the hydro rules?

Steam engines need to have documentation (proof) of a 2011 hydro test. The current hydro from your Live Steam/Diesel club is probably sufficient.

Folks with steam equipment must contact the museum director prior to bringing your equipment (Ted Rita <ted.rita@hesston.org>).

Why can't kids run trains?

Hesston is a museum and must follow its insurance carrier's rules.  The rules state that you must be at least 16 years of age and hold a valid driver's license (a learner's permit will not suffice) if you are operating equipment at the museum.

How does Hesston's "Lease" agreement work?

All engines and rolling stock running at Hesston need to either be the property of the museum OR (as in our case) be leased by Hesston for use by you.  A lease agreement will be provided when you arrive.  Your equipment will be leased for the duration of your visit.  This is a formality but needs to be followed.

Only a half day of running on Sunday?

The main line track needs to be free for public rides starting promptly at 1:00 PM Sunday.  If you are NOT a Hesston Steam Museum member and a regular passenger hauler there, you will need to clear the track for the museum volunteers to haul the public.  You are invited to spend the entire day on Sunday at the museum to enjoy the exhibits and take some train rides.

Read Hesston's Rules as they pertain to this event.

Food

We are planning a banquet dinner for Saturday Night. Cost is $11 per person. Here is the menu:

A pork chop dinner served with baked potato, green beans and corn.  Also included, the soft drink of your choice and dessert.

Breakfast will be available on Saturday AM.

A lunch menu of burgers, dogs and tacos etc. will be available on site at the Museum's "Whistle Stop" cafe on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  There are several fine restaurants and fast food establishments with in several miles of the Museum too.

More Railroad Fun at the Hesston Steam Museum

In addition to the 7.5" gauge track, the museum's 14" gauge "Park Train" steamers will be in operation along with one of Hesston's full scale narrow gauge (2' and 3' gauge) trains Schedules TBA.
